BACKGROUND: The Alabama Wildlife Federation (AWF), a 501c3 charity and the state’s oldest and largest citizen’s conservation organization, seeks qualified candidates for the Habitat Learning Lab Specialist position in north Alabama (see map). One of AWF’s primary focus areas is conservation education, and part of AWF’s comprehensive conservation education strategy includes outdoor, inquiry-based learning opportunities on school grounds through our Habitat Learning Lab Program (previously called Alabama Outdoor Classroom Program).
For over 20 years AWF’s Habitat Learning Lab Program has provided a support system and technical assistance to Kindergarten-12th grade schools for the sustainable development and utilization of schoolyard habitats and outdoor learning stations on school grounds as educational tools for teachers and students. The core outdoor learning stations in a Habitat Lab include sensory, butterfly and pollinator gardens, frog and toad habitats, songbird habitats, log decomposition stations, and weather stations. To help schools use their Habitat Labs as educational tools, the AWF created the Junior Wildlife Scientist Program along with other educational resources.

POSITION SUMMARY: The new Habitat Learning Lab Specialist will provide direct support for K-12 schools enrolled in the Habitat Learning Lab program in north Alabama and will be a vital member of the Habitat Learning Lab team who coordinates the details of the HLL Program statewide.
DUTIES: Activities include but are not limited to the following:
- Provide assistance and support to schools enrolled in the Habitat Learning Lab Program in north Alabama including the following:
- Basic Information Requests about the AWF HLL Program
- On-site & Off-site Consultations with School Planning Committees
- Customized Habitat Learning Lab Site Maps using Microsoft Word & Google Earth
- Customized Materials Lists and Estimated Budgets using Microsoft Excel
- Habitat Learning Lab Build Days & Work Days Planning and Assistance
- Long-term Maintenance Plan Development
- Faculty Training for Educational Use of Habitat Learning Labs
- Certification Planning & Assistance
- Organize and facilitate regional educational training workshops for Habitat Learning Lab schools
- Manage and carry out projects included in the Habitat Learning Lab Program strategic plan
Note: Some of these duties require travel to schools, meetings, and workshop locations. Travel reimbursement details are below.
MINIMUM EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources, Wildlife Science, Environmental Science, K-12 Education, or related field
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE / SKILLS:
- Knowledge of native wildlife, native plants, wildlife habitat, and/or environmental sciences
- Demonstrated project management including developing and carrying out budgets, task lists, and timelines, along with the capability to adjust to changing circumstances with limited notice
- Experience with using Microsoft Word for design work including layout of images and text
- Experience with using basic functions in Microsoft Excel
- Experience with landscaping activities including building, planting and/or maintaining outdoor gardens with native plants
- Demonstrated written and oral communication skills (such as writing articles &/or giving presentations)
- Experience in working on projects with partner organizations/businesses in a professional and timely manner
- Demonstrated ability to work with a team
- Experience working with K-12 schools including administrators, teachers and/or students
- Experience with webpage development and/or social media management
COMPENSATION/EMPLOYMENT PROVISIONS:
- Starting Salary: $38,000 – $45,000 commensurate with education and experience
- Meal and/or lodging expenses covered for travel when required
- Business use of personal vehicle reimbursed at the federal mileage rate

Administrative Assistant – Alabama Nature Center
POSITION SUMMARY:
Alabama Wildlife Federation (AWF), a 501c3 non-profit and the state’s oldest and largest citizen’s conservation organization, is seeking qualified candidates for Administrative Assistant at our Alabama Nature Center facility in Millbrook, Alabama. This is a full-time position with benefits. The Administrative Assistant will work under the supervision of the ANC Administrative Coordinator and will assist with delivery of the following duties.
DUTIES:
Ensuring programs are taught according to the curriculum developed by the AWF Delta & Bay Conservation Center staff and in consideration of the mission of the Alabama Wildlife Federation
- Welcome and Reception – assisting with general public welcome and reception responsibilities, including multi-line phone reception, email communications, and face-to-face greeting.
- Administrative Services – assisting with administrative/clerical needs of Alabama Nature Staff
- Database Entry/List Management – assisting with data input and report output; common operating programs utilized are Excel, Word, and Access.
- Scheduling – assisting with tasks associated with school field trip/other education program bookings, rentals and meetings
- Billing, Deposit Preparation, and Accounts Receivable – assisting with deposit preparation and billing/payment associated with Alabama Nature Center programs and event/meeting rentals
- Purchasing – assisting with preparation, acquisition, and timely delivery of supplies and materials for general office and program needs
- Gift Shop – assisting with inventory management, in-store sales, and overall operation of the on-site Alabama Nature Center Gift Shop
- Meeting/Event Rentals – assisting with rental inquiries, bookings, logistics, and set-up and takedown needs associated with meetings/events at the Alabama Nature Center
- Open/Close and Housekeeping Logistics – assist with daily
QUALIFICATIONS/DESIRED ATTRIBUTES:
- Proficient in Microsoft Office programs: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint
- Motivated, positive thinking, self-starter that can work in a team environment
- Excellent people skills as well as verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment

COMPENSATION/EMPLOYMENT PROVISIONS:
- Starting Salary: $28,000 – $32,000 commensurate with qualifications/experience
- Hours: 8AM-5PM Monday- Friday; occasional evening/weekend hours during special events

The Naturalist is responsible for sharing their passion for the natural world when teaching outdoor education programs to groups of children and adults. The Naturalist’s goals are to encourage students’ awareness and appreciation of the environment, broaden the students’ knowledge of science concepts, and foster students’ understanding of the proper use, management, and protection of our natural resources.
- REQUIREMENTS:
Ensuring programs are taught according to the curriculum developed by the AWF Delta & Bay Conservation Center staff and in consideration of the mission of the Alabama Wildlife Federation - Ability to set tone and be in control of your group
- Ability to interact successfully and communicate effectively with supervisors, co-workers, teachers, parents, and students
- Ability to respond to immediate needs and make independent decisions pertaining to students, programs, and emergency situations
- Ability to be reliable and punctual for all programs
- Ability to hike on trails with uneven terrain
- Ability to work outside in a variety of weather conditions and temperatures
- Willingness to handle and care for resident education animals used for programs
- Willingness to maintain CPR/First Aid Certification (training provided)
- A background check will be required
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s or Associate degree from a four-year college or university with major course work in the natural sciences or education field
- Experience working with children in an educational setting
COMPENSATION:
This position is part-time, hourly, and seasonal. The number of hours offered varies depending on when students are at the AWF Delta & Bay Conservation Center for school programs. Hourly pay for this position will be determined based on qualifications. There is a potential for raises. There are no health or retirement benefits offered with this position.
