BACKGROUND: The Alabama Wildlife Federation (AWF) is a 501c3 charity and the state’s

oldest and largest citizen’s conservation organization. AWF’s mission is to promote the wise use

and responsible stewardship of Alabama’s wildlife, forests, fish, waters, and soils. This is

accomplished through programs and projects in three primary focus areas: Conservation

Education, Resource Stewardship, and Hunting and Angling Heritage. Since 2000, the AWF Board

of Directors has raised more than $10 Million dollars to relocate our state headquarters, develop

the Alabama Nature Center, and expand our Conservation Education and Resource Stewardship

programs. Phase I of the Alabama Nature Center was opened in 2007. Since that time, over

130,000 attendees have visited AWF’s facilities at Lanark in Millbrook, Alabama. In September of

2015, Phase II of the Alabama Nature Center, The NaturePlex, will come online. This 23,000

square foot Welcome and Education Center will contain a Hands-on Discovery Hall,

Theater/Auditorium, Classrooms with lab facilities, and will allow AWF to expand dramatically

our programs and impact through the Alabama Nature Center. The AWF Board of Directors

desires to further build on these successes by expanding our Alabama Nature Center staff through

a new Coordinator of Special Programs and Naturalist/Volunteer Recruitment and Training.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Coordinator of Special Programs and Naturalist/Volunteer

Recruitment and Training will develop new and sustain/grow existing strategic relationships with

individuals, organizations, educational institutions, and other entities as needed, in order to

establish and manage robust volunteer and naturalist programs to serve the full programmatic

needs of the Alabama Nature Center. In addition, the Coordinator will be responsible for

managing the Alabama Nature Center’s Special Programs focused on weekday general public

activities and periodic evening general public activities. The position will report to the AWF

Executive Director and will work hand-in-hand with the Alabama Nature Center Staff Team.



DUTIES: Activities include but are not limited to the following:

1. Design and implement activities to strategically identify, assess, recruit, train, and sustain

volunteers and naturalists for roles associated with Alabama Nature Center programs

2. Design, plan, implement and/or coordinate delivery of natural resource education programs

for weekday and evening youth and adult audiences at the Alabama Nature Center

3. Assist other Alabama Nature Center Team Members with program instruction, as needed,

during peak periods



POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

1. B.S. Degree or higher in natural resources or natural sciences fields

2. Education related degree/training/experience a plus; volunteer management a plus

3. Demonstrated ability to fluidly form relationships with a wide range of people

4. Demonstrated written and oral communication skills

5. Demonstrated ability to speak effectively in public and communicate with enthusiasm

6. Willingness and ability to travel periodically for in-state day-trips; infrequent overnight

7. Willingness and ability to work periodic evenings and weekend events as needed to meet

position objectives

8. Willingness and ability to work with a team

9. Dependable transportation

10. Commitment to wildlife and related natural resource conservation and the goals and purposes

of the Alabama Wildlife Federation



COMPENSATION/EMPLOYMENT PROVISIONS:

1. Starting Salary: $35,000 – $38,000 commensurate with education and experience

2. Meal and Lodging expenses covered for travel

3. Business use of personal vehicle reimbursed at the federal mileage rate

4. Blue Cross/Blue Shield Health and Dental Insurance; Life Insurance; Short and Long-Term

Disability Insurance.

5. Simple IRA Plan upon qualification
