Shooting Sports Scholarship Fund for Alabama Youth

AWF Thomas and Cindy Harris Shooting Sport Scholarship Fund
Connecting Alabama’s Youth to Safe, Instructor-Led Shooting Sports Opportunities

Many Alabama youth are eager to learn about shooting sports and hunting-related outdoor recreation but may not have access to the necessary resources or instruction. The AWF Thomas and Cindy Harris Shooting Sport Scholarship Fund helps bridge that gap.

This scholarship program offers Alabama adolescents ages 12 to 16 the opportunity to participate in hands-on shooting sports experiences at no cost. Guided by trained instructors and accompanied by a parent or guardian, participants will gain foundational skills in firearm safety, gun care, and target shooting technique.

By reducing barriers to participation, this program fosters a deeper connection to Alabama’s outdoor traditions and wildlife heritage.

There is no cost to participants. This program is fully funded through the generosity of donors to the AWF Thomas and Cindy Harris Shooting Sport Scholarship Fund.

How are applicants selected?
We prioritize youth who are new to shooting sports, demonstrate interest in outdoor activities, and may face barriers to participation. Selection is based on availability, interest, and regional site access.

How often are sessions held?
We aim to host events quarterly, rotating among site partners to reach youth across the state.

When will applicants be notified?
Notifications are sent on a rolling basis. AWF will contact selected families with details and scheduling options.

Is it ok to take and post pictures of the experience?
Yes, after the instruction and experience, pictures may be taken.  We ask participants to leave all mobile devices in their car while participating in the experience, for safety reasons and respect for the instructor.

If inclement weather forces us to cancel the event, we will do our best to find a date to reschedule, or include the opportunity in the next quarterly scheduled event.
